So, is this shirt a button-up shirt, or is it a button-down? Who really knows, and does it really matter? I guess it’s a matter of perspective. I like to refer to these specific shirts as a button-up shirt because, in my world, a button-down shirt has always been a men’s garment where buttons are used to hold the shirt collars down. Either way, it’s a white shirt with buttons and it has been around for a very long time.

In fact, men started wearing these buttoned shirts, aka “white dress shirts,” back in the Victorian era, when many considered wearing a white shirt a symbol of wealth. A working class man did not have the resources to wear a white shirt every day, therefore the practice of wearing a white buttoned shirt each day silently distinguishing classes of people. Thus, the terms “white-collar” and “blue-collar” were born.

The Classic Becomes Casual

As we all know, post-2020, life has become much less formal and many of us don’t need to look polished for work everyday like we used to. While our daily routines no longer require it, there is no reason to ignore or neglect those pieces of clothing in our closet that make us feel good and a bit more polished when we wear them.

This inspired me to pull out my beloved, but not frequently worn, white button-up shirt and style it again for spring and summer. This time, with a casual twist, with light blue denim.
