A Basic Dress

What a great place to start! For anytime of year, but especially as we think about transitioning from winter into spring. A basic solid color dress is a great layering piece, and the perfect foundation for building polished, sophisticated outfits for a variety of occasions.

1. The Little Black Dress

In this post I share simple and easy dress outfits styling one of the most basic dresses you can own, a tank dress. While almost any dress will work, in this post I am sharing how to wear a black tank dress and an olive brown tank dress. Both are dark, slimming colors, which make them easy to wear.

2. Classic Black Outfit for Dinner On the Town or a Funeral

This outfit comes together easily by slipping on a simple v-neck cardigan sweater over your black tank dress. By adding a Tory Burch belt with a gold buckle, a strand of black pearls and pumps, the outfit is complete.

Polished and very pulled together, this outfit will have you out the door looking very refined.

Switching it up a bit, I’ve switched out the pearl jewelry and the tank dress for an equally fabulous look. If you want more information about the pieces worn in this look, check out the “get this look” section below this picture.

4. Outfit for an Important Meeting or a Day at the Office

Slip this grayish beige silk and linen blazer over your black tank dress, and pair it with a black skinny belt, nude heels (or flats) for a sophisticated look. For a bit of shine, choose a silver omega necklace, and add a silver cuff bracelet for additional polish.

If you’re not a belt person, skip the belt and leave your blazer open. The natural fibers of this silk and linen blazer help to keep you comfortable when it’s warm, and warm when it’s a bit cooler.

Perfect for transitioning between seasons, you will reach for this neutral blazer to wear with both dresses and jeans.

5. Cute Dress Outfit with an Edgy Vibe

To create a current, edgy vibe consider wearing a moto jacket over your favorite dress! Here I am wearing a cream faux leather moto jacket over a black tank dress.

Since the metal snaps on this jacket are silver, considering wearing silver accessories to create a cohesive, coordinated look. Therefore, I have selected a silver omega-style necklace, and the Pacita Sterling Cuff Bracelet from Sundance Catalog to polish this look.

Details matter!

Inspired to pull out the dresses in the back of your closet and style them up? I hope this post has sparked some thoughts about how you can use dresses you already own to build beautiful, stylish dress outfits!

If you do not have a tank dress in your closet, I encourage you to try one. I find them extremely comfortable and versatile to dress up or dress down depending on what you have going on.

Hi Dianne, so glad I found your YouTube channel and blog. It’s refreshing to find classy fashion forward styles for older ladies. And especially with dresses.
Not sure where you’re located but the tank dress styles will only work during the warmer months where I am. As a blog suggestion, would you give style ideas for the colder winter months? Also, I’d like to be able to wear dresses with bare legs but broken veins and spots aren’t what I want to reveal. Are pantyhose a thing of the past?

    Thanks for your response.

Hi Laura – Thank you for your feedback. I live in Michigan so it’s plenty cold. In the last few months, I did a couple videos and blog posts with dresses for cooler weather. Check these out.
