Style Edit for Women over 50
Designers offer new fashion trends each season to spice up our lives and freshen up our wardrobes.
Consider the fashion runway shows in New York, Paris, Milan, London, as the “playgrounds” for big designers, such as Chanel, YSL, Tory Burch, and Dior. The concepts they show are edgy and fun, eccentric and mysterious, and usually anything but boring.
Consider these runway shows as a designer’s gallery of work, allowing full expression of their creativity. The works of fashion art displayed on the runway platforms spark interest and excitement. Keep in mind that very few of the identical designs make it to the street.
The new fashion trends each season should offer inspiration and, most of the time, need interpretation, and not literally, especially for mature women.
Make it Yours & Make it Wearable
At the beginning of each new season, it’s always exciting to add a few new pieces of clothing to our closets to add some excitement to our wardrobes and as a new opportunity to express ourselves through the clothing we wear.
One key to success is intentionally choosing only the pieces and styles that work for you and compliments your body type. Thinking through your choices and deciding what speaks to you and expresses your style ensures that you have the pieces you need in your closet to project the message you want to send out into the world.
A fashion victim is someone who wears all the fashion trends, just because they are on the store shelves, regardless if they speak to you and look good on your body.
Being intentional with your wardrobe choices and determining if the fashion trends speak to you before you buy is a sure way to avoid being a fashion victim.
Fashion Trends: Wear, Edit or Pass
1. Puffer Coats
Trend: WEAR
Wearing big fluffy puffer jackets can make you look heavy.
Trend EDIT:
Wearing a quilted jacket gives a similar trendy look without adding volume to your silhouette.
Get the Look: Yellow Puffer Winter Jacket (similar), Black V-Neck T-Shirt, Medium Wash Skinny Jeans, Knee High Pointed Toe Boots, Gold Braided Belt, Gold David Yurman Necklace
2. Oversized Blazers
Trend: PASS
Oversized blazers look sloppy and add weight to your silhouette. Consider wearing an unstructured blazer, versus oversized.
Trend EDIT:
An unstructured blazer in the correct size provides a casual look, with a similar “oversized” vibe while looking more polished.
Get the Look: Unstructured Black Blazer, Black Sleeveless Mock Turtleneck, White Skinny Jeans, Gold Sandals, Gold Chain Belt, Pearl Drop Earrings (similar)
3. Wide-Leg Pants
Trend: PASS
The wide-leg and flared pants, especially the cropped style shown below, are unflattering and less sophisticated and polished.
Trend EDIT:
Not quite ready to give up on skinny jeans entirely, I will dabble in the wide-leg and flared pants trend by trying out linen palazzo pants for spring and summer.
4. Low-Rise Jeans
Trend: EDIT
Low-rise jeans are doable, but not the preferred rise.
Trend EDIT:
Mid-rise jeans have always been my comfortable go-to rise choice. Low-rise jeans are not out of the question, but not a go-to.
Get the Look: Unstructured Black Blazer (similar), White V-Neck T-Shirt, Medium Wash Skinny Jeans, Camo Knit Loafers, Pearl Necklace, Pearl Drop Earrings (similar)
5. Bright Colors
Trend: EDIT
Bold and Bright Colors are fun and cheerful! The key to looking stylish and polished in bold colors is wearing them in moderation. Too much of a good thing has a tendency to become bad quickly if it’s overdone.
Bright colors are best worn as accessories or in a blouse or top. Bright colors worn as skirts and pants overtake the outfit and look less polished.
A head-to-toe outfit in bold colors is especially difficult to pull off, unless you’re a pencil thin 18-year-old model who looks good in anything she wears.
Trend EDIT:
When wearing bold colors, always ground your outfit with neutral color basics. As in the example below, the bright teal blouse looks sophisticated when paired with white pants. The white pants showcase the blouse, and the ensemble looks balanced and beautiful.
Get the Look: Teal Sleeveless Blouse, White Skinny Jeans, Nude Pointed Toe Flats, Pearl Bracelet, Pearl Drop Earrings
6. Catsuits
Trend: PASS
Cat woman is about the only women who can get away with wearing a catsuit, unless she is dressing up for Halloween.
Maybe designers sent catsuits down the runway to weed out the true fashion victims out there. Should be interesting to see who wears them.
Never fear, I have interpreted an elegant, wearable version of this trend, and it’s the wide leg romper.
Trend EDIT:
The wide leg romper, shown here in the color apricot, is especially beautiful and ideal for dressy events during spring and summer.
Ideal for a dinner date or to a wedding with some beautiful pearl or rhinestone accessories. This is a beautiful alternative to wearing a dress.
7. Cutouts
Trend: PASS
Too revealing and not classy at all, this dress with cut out details is anything, but sophisticated. This is a look for women who want attention that will get them in trouble.
Trend EDIT:
This stylish pink sweater with cutout detail on the shoulder is classy while offering a nod to the trend. Cute with a pair of white walking shorts or jeans.
This is an ideal sweater to take you into spring and wear when evenings get cold during the summer.
8. Bra as a Shirt
Trend: PASS
While wearing a bra as a shirt will never make it into my wardrobe, there will always be a teen and twenty-something audience for trends like this.
Trend EDIT:
Wearing a cami is a beautiful alternative to this bra-as-a-shirt trend. It’s stylish and sophisticated and looks polished regardless of seasonal trends.
Wear your cami under a blazer, with a pair of jeans, slacks or skirt, for a timeless look.
The key to feeling good and looking fabulous and comfortable is wearing the right strapless bra.
Warners make the perfect strapless bra! If you need a fabulous strapless bra to hold you in place, I can assure you, this bra will “never let you down!”
It’s comfortable, and will have you looking and feeling polished, knowing that you don’t have to worry about bra straps, or tugging and adjusting all day.
9. Pearls
Trend: WEAR
More pearls are always better! Beautiful and timeless, a pair of pearl earrings or a string of pearls have a way of elevating an outfit.
This season will be all about pearls!
Get the Look: Olive Cargo Vest, White V-Neck T-Shirt, Medium Wash Skinny Jeans, Camo Knit Loafers, Pearl Necklace, Pearl Drop Earrings (similar)
Get the Look: Bright Pink Blouse (similar), White Skinny Jeans, Pearl Drop Earrings (similar), Pearl Necklace, Nude Pointed Toe Flats
10. Plaid Skirts
Trend: PASS
Perfect for school girls and teenagers. This trend is for the younger crowd.
11. Sequins
Trend: PASS
Overdone sequins are a big PASS! Sequins have the potential of looking beautiful and elegant when done correctly. However, the key is wearing sequins in moderation.
Trend EDIT:
Sequins are beautiful when worn as an accent. Under a black blazer, this pink sequin tank top is a nod to the sequin trend, while keeping your look classy and charming. Slip on your favorite pair of jeans or a skirt, and you’re ready for a Valentine’s Day date night.
Perfect for a black-tie event or a formal spring or summer wedding, this halter-style, pink column dress is stunning.
Beautifully embellished with silver sequins, this dress has the perfect amount of interest and detail to be a show-stopper.
12. Loafers
Trend: EDIT
Standard loafers have little personality and have a tendency to look quite frumpy. If you love wearing loafers, spice it up a bit and incorporate some charm and personality into your shoe selection.
Trend EDIT:
Wear fun stylish loafers such as the camo knit loafers, pictured here. Knit loafers are extraordinarily comfortable, interesting and stylish. Try them.
Get the Look: Khaki Utility Jacket, White V-Neck T-Shirt, Medium Wash Skinny Jeans, Camo Knit Loafers, Pearl Necklace, Pearl Drop Earrings
13. Chain Belts
Trend: WEAR
Get the Look: Denim Jacket, Taupe Sleeveless Mock Turtleneck (similar), White Skinny Jeans, Gold Sandals (similar), Gold Chain Belt (similar), Pearl Drop Earrings
14. Fringe
Trend: PASS
Fringe is a detail that is interesting and has its place in western attire and is crucial if you’re going after a 20s flapper vibe.
Unfortunately, this look is not especially flattering to the body, nor is it practical for every day.
Trend EDIT:
Saving fringe for the right piece of clothing, such as this cocktail dress, is ideal. It’s stylish, fresh and the movement of the fringe creates interest.
Ideal for this application, but certainly not durable or practical for everyday wear.
15. Crop Tops
Trend: PASS
Absolutely designed for teens and the twenty-something cool girl crowd, crop tops have limited opportunity for women who have less than perfect abs or prefer not to expose that part of their bodies.
Trend EDIT:
Consider this button-down shirt with a cropped pull over as an alternative interpretation of the crop top trend.
This layered crop and button-up pairing is a stylish choice, and draws attention to the smallest portion of the torso, which takes attention away from those who want to hide belly weight.
Love this look….thank you for posting. Wondering (since you are 5’9″) how you scale the skinny white pants to the location on the leg/ankle. ie – right at the ankle, 3″ above the ankle, 2″ above the ankle. Just looking for your thoughts. Thanks ever so much…love your channel
Hi – Skinny jeans look good at various lengths. My blue jeans go almost to my ankle, while my white and black jeans are shorter. I love the variety and wear them however they come. Have fun with it!
These are so great! I was not able to use the links on most of the posts. Could you help?
