Skincare over 50 Self-Care Routine
While you may expect to see a big lineup of moisturizers, eye creams, toners, and serums, that is not what you’re going to find here. In fact, my daily skincare routine is quite simple and does not include any lotions and potions.
You will find that my skincare routine is very uncomplicated, and includes a few simple steps. In fact, my skincare is more about good habits and a healthy lifestyle, than about what I apply to my face.
This is my routine for taking care of my skin to look younger at age 55:
1. Drink Water Upon Rising
The first thing I do in the morning when I wake up is take a big drink of water. I always have my water bottle on my bedside table, so I have it available in the morning or if I get thirsty during the night. One of the main reasons I reach for my water first thing in the morning is, I’m thirsty. Typically, it’s been eight hours since I drank any water, so I’m ready to get hydrated.
Luck has it, that it’s also very good for you! According to an article I recently read by Pinnacle Care Internal Medicine, “Drinking water first thing in the morning flushes out the stomach and balances the lymphatic system. A stable lymphatic system will help build a strong immune system, which will prevent us from getting sick as often.”
Drinking water in the morning and all day has many other benefits that make you look younger and promote good health.
When you drink water, your body releases toxins faster, which helps to promote glowing, radiant skin. Alternatively, if you allow your body to become dehydrated, your skin will look show it with more wrinkles, so if you want to look younger, drink up!
2. Apply Argan Oil Before Working Out
This all started about 8 years ago when I was training for a half-marathon. My church running group had a 7 am Saturday morning start time, and training as a team was MUCH EASIER than training alone. So I prioritized getting up early each Saturday morning from April through October, to train together with my running team, including a couple of my girlfriends who were on this journey with me.
Typically, I wouldn’t care how I looked, but one of my girlfriends was “picture happy” at this hour of the morning. She loved to take pictures before, during and after our team runs and post them on Facebook….ugh! I learning quickly that I needed to look more presentable to avoid the risk of having some embarrassing photos out in the social media universe.
I found argan oil gave me a quick “facelift” early in the morning. It absorbed quickly, and left me with a healthy-looking, hydrated glow and looking a bit more ready for the world and youthful. Besides, why not start nourishing our skin first thing in the morning?
3. Workout 30 Minutes Daily
Each morning, I spend about 30 minutes working out. This includes about 20 minutes of cardio (typically a 4 mph walking pace) and 10 minutes of weights. To optimize my time, I typically do compound workouts that target arms, legs and abs all at the same time.
Daily exercise helps to improve blood flow, which nourishes the skin, and removes toxins to make us look and feel healthier.
Prevent & Reverse the Signs of Aging
According to U.S. Dermatology Partners, doing regular moderate daily aerobic exercise can literally make our skin look younger. In a study, “….individuals were asked to maintain a moderate aerobic exercise routine for three months. When testing the skin after the three month exercise period, the findings were remarkable. The skin of the individuals who were exercising more frequently closely resembled healthy skin for individuals of much younger ages, between 20 and 40. […] research tells us exercising may actually make it possible for you to turn back the clock for your skin. With just thirty minutes of aerobic exercise each day, you may just start looking younger.”
Track Daily Movement for Success
I track daily activity using my Apple Watch. My personal goal is to hit or exceed:
- 520 move calories
- 50 move minutes
- 10 hours of standing
To achieve my daily numbers, I go for another walk outside (minimum 20 minutes) in the evening to hit my 50 minute goal.
4. Wash Face Once Per Day
Washing my face in the evening before heading to bed to remove my make-up has been a practice for as long as I can remember. Then in the morning, I either wipe my face with a wet washcloth or rinse my face off in the shower. Common sense has always told me that my face couldn’t be “dirty” because all I did was sleep. Besides washing too frequently maintains our skin’s natural, healthy oils, which helps to make our faces look more healthy and radiant.
It appears common sense has not failed me, because a Prevention article I recently read entitled, Here’s Why Your Skin Looks Better When You Stop Washing Your Face, shows there are several benefits to not using soap every time you wipe your face. One of the major reasons: fewer lines and wrinkles. “The benefit of a water rinse is that your skin won’t dry out, and this can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, says Kally Papantoniou, MD, a New York-based dermatologist.”
So if you think you need to wash your face two or three times a day, think again if you want to have more youthful looking skin,
5. Exfoliate Twice a Week
While in the shower, I apply a skin exfoliator to my face, neck and chest. This skincare step is perfect for removing dead skin cells, which can make our skin look drab. By exfoliating a couple times a week, my skin feels fresh, looks more youthful, and hydrated.
Recently I have been using Kate Somerville’s Exfolikate in the shower to exfoliate my skin. It is a lovely product which I have really enjoyed using. It provides a tingling sensation which feels great and does a fabulous job of freshening up my face, making it look vibrant and youthful.
I received this product in a beauty box (Boxycharm.com) a short time ago and have only started using it recently when my previous exfoliating product ran out. When I searched for this brand to get more information to share with you, I realized it is quite pricy. While I really like it, I will probably look for a similar alternative when it runs out.
According to R. Sonia Batra, MD, a Los Angeles-based dermatologist, [at] Age 30 […] natural exfoliation begins to slow down, which can leave the skin looking dull.” For this reason, I like to help my skin look fresher and more radiant by using a facial exfoliator in the shower twice a week. It’s quick and easy and makes a big difference in making my skin look brighter and more youthful.
6. Use NIRA Skincare Laser to Reduce Wrinkles
New to the line-up of my daily skincare is the NIRA Skincare laser, and I am super excited. I have been using this device for about 30 days and I have already seen some impressive results already. NIRA recommends using this skincare laser for 90 days to see the full results.
I’m excited about seeing the results in the next 60 days!
What is NIRA?
The NIRA Skincare Laser is an at-home, hand-held device, safe for using to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. It is a non-fractional laser device that targets the fibroblasts in our skin. The process naturally stimulates the creation of collagen and elastin by:
- breaking down proteins in the skin
- encouraging tissue regeneration
- causes tissue contraction (tightening)
How does it work?
The NIRA laser heats up the skin without destroying it and stimulates your body’s collagen production to fill in skin imperfections such as fine lines or wrinkles.
NIRA uses a lower power, non-fractional laser for a mostly pain-free treatment which can used consecutive days at home transmitting more energy over a one-month period than most professional dermatology treatments do in a single visit and for the same or more skin rejuvenation.
Is it safe?
Yes! The NIRA skincare laser device is FDA-cleared and safe and effective in reducing wrinkles in all skin tones.
Is NIRA worth trying?
Absolutely!! It only takes about two minutes a day to complete a treatment around your eyes. Many see results in 30-60 days, however for best results it takes 90 days. The laser is safe to use two times a day to see quicker results.
NIRA recommends following each treatment with the NIRA Hyaluronic Acid Serum for ideal results.
It’s affordable and NIRA provides a 90 day money-back guarantee
What are the benefits?
- Builds collagen
- Reduce fine lines & wrinkles
- Tighten skin
- Lift hooded eyes
- Even skin tone & texture
- Brighten dark spots
- Improve acne scarring
- Reduce the appearance of broken capillaries
7. Apply Argan Oil before Makeup
Argan oil is my go-to, all-over face and body moisturizer. I’ve been using it about eight years before that I used coconut oil on my face and body, but found it too heavy. After learning all the ancillary natural benefits of argan oil, I became hooked. Besides being an amazing facial and body moisturizer, it is also fabulous for our nails, hair, and lips too.
Fabulous Body Moisturizer All Year Long
Applying argan oil to my legs in the summer helps to keep my tan longer, and in the winter it is great for keeping our bodies comfortable when the air is especially dry and cold.
Before applying makeup, I may add a bit more argan oil to my face, depending if I need it. If it looks and feels hydrated, I will begin applying makeup right away. In the winter, or if the air is dry, I’ll add a bit more argan oil to my face or maybe some CeraVe moisturizing cream if I feel like I need a little extra coverage when it’s bitter cold outside.
I found a Healthline article about argan oil that does a great job of listing and explaining the 12 Benefits and Uses of Argan Oil. Check it out!
No Sunscreen?
No! Argan oil provides the natural sun protection for my average daily sun exposure. It’s rich in vitamin E, which is a natural antioxidant and provides daily sun protection against damaging ultraviolet rays. Unlike many commercial sunscreens, argan oil has sun protection properties that are toxin-free. Who knows what the long-term effect is from putting all those chemicals on our skin every day? I do not know, and I don’t want to find out.
8. Eat Mostly Vegetables
What you eat to nourish your skin is MUCH MORE IMPORTANT than what you put on it. I prioritize eating lots of vegetables every day, and nearly always consume at least one avocado daily. Avocados have tons of healthy fats, vitamins and nutrients that are great for our skin and overall good health.
Further, I limit intake of foods such as breads & pastas which contain gluten, cheese and yogurt which contain dairy, and sugars including both natural and processed sugars.
Foods Rich in Antioxidants
We are all exposed to free radicals, secondhand smoke, air pollution, and sunlight which damage our skin. Eating fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants protect our skin from free radical damage.
Although it can be quite tough, I make it a daily goal to eat at least five portions of fruits and vegetables. According to a Healthline.com article, some foods rich in antioxidants include:
- Pecans
- Blueberries
- Artichokes
- Rasberries
- Kale
- Red Cabbage
- Beans
- Beets
Five portions sounds like a lot, but these antioxidants protect our skin from damage. Antioxidants are great for maintaining supple skin, an even skin tone and a natural glow.
Vitamin C Reduces Wrinkles
Vitamin C helps to reduce wrinkles and promotes collagen production. Producing adequate collagen is important to keep our skin supple and smooth. In addition, collagen helps strengthen capillaries that deliver blood, thus oxygen, to our skin. Thus, improved circulation will help our skin look brighter and more youthful. Significant sources of vitamin C are fruits and vegetables, like:
- kiwi,
- strawberries,
- blueberries,
- broccoli, and
- bell peppers
9. Wash with Vitamin C Face Cleanser
Before going to bed, I wash my face to remove my make-up using a mild 2 in 1 foaming face cleanser by Frulatte that includes Vitamin C. Based upon a recommendation I received from a clinician after an amazing hydro facial a few years ago; I learned that Vitamin C is great for reducing wrinkles and fighting signs of aging, so I jumped on that bandwagon and stuck with it. I also take a vitamin C supplement to ensure I get all the nutrients my body needs.
Based upon a Dermcollective article I read recently, what I was told is true. “Vitamin C is commonly added to cleansers and helps fight the visible signs of aging. Vitamin C stimulates collagen production in skin and prevents oxidative damage. Adding a vitamin C cleanser to your skin care regimen can provide many benefits to promote youthful, fresh-looking skin in the evening to remove your makeup and simply splashing your face with water in the mornings.”
10. Get 8 Hours of Sleep
Our bodies heal as we sleep, so it is super important to get adequate sleep to look younger, radiant and feel our best. If having fewer wrinkles is your goal, and I know it’s mine, setting a priority to get 8 hours is crucial. Our bodies make collagen when we are sleeping, so unless we give it the time and the rest it needs, we will look older.
Further, blood flow also increases as we sleep. Since blood carries oxygen and nutrients to our skin, getting the adequate sleep also helps us look more radiant and refreshed.
