Check out my latest video and post for women – Makeup over 50: How to Look Up Close.
I have created this for women over 50, like myself, who want to look radiant and fresh and steer clear of makeup that exaggerates fine lines and wrinkles.
You can look great every day by following this drug store makeup tutorial. It provides all the steps you need to create a beautiful look that is natural and dewy.
Be sure to stick around until the end of the video for two non-makeup tips that are critical for looking and feeling your best every day.

1. Exfoliate
Exfoliating your skin and lips with a salt scrub twice per week to remove old, flaky skin makes your face appear fresh and more radiant. This is an important step when applying makeup over 50, to prepare your skin so it looks fresh and radiant. The key to looking good up close is to properly prepare your skin. There are a variety of salt scrubs available on the market. Choose the right one for you, but don’t skip this step.
2. Moisturize
Exfoliating your skin and lips with a salt scrub twice per week to remove old, flaky skin makes your face appear fresh and more radiant. CeraVe moisturizing cream is thick and rich and leave my skin very hydrated and ready for makeup.
Makeup over 50 Products for Radiant Skin
1. Apply a Hydrating Concealer
Apply a hydrating concealer under the eyes. Press it in to your eye area and let it sit temporarily while applying the foundation. Letting it sit for a minute or two helps the product to set better and provides better coverage. Then come back and blend it in for a beautiful finish. ELF Hydrating camo concealer provides nice coverage – it is ideal makeup over 50.
The shade used in the tutorial is medium peach.
2. Using a Hydrating Foundation is the Secret
When applying makeup over 50, choosing the right foundation is one of the most important steps if you want to look good up close. Apply a hydrating foundation such as Milani Glow Hydrating Skin Tint. This product is the key benefit of looking fresh and dewy up close. It is perfect for mature skin because it does not settle into fine lines or wrinkles. Another great makeup over 50 product.
The shade used in the tutorial is Light to Medium.
3. A Earthy Color Eyeshadow looks Natural
Bronzer is a nice multi-purpose product. It is an ideal natural color eyeshadow, as it does not have the fallout which I typically experience with standard eyeshadow (fallout =powder drop below the eye).
The product I used in the video is no longer available, so I have attached a similar matte bronzer you may wish to consider.
The lightest color in this four-color palate is a great all-over shade. I use the darkest shade in the crease to minimize hooding and create shape and definition to the eyes. This four season palette is by Physician Formula
4. Eye Pencil creates Definition
Next, and a very important step when applying makeup over 50, choose a stick eyeliner such as Essence Long Lasting eye pencil and apply it to the top edge of the waterline at the base of the top eyelashes.
Eyeliner applied at the lower base of the eyelashes define the top edge of our eyes and make our eyes appear more lifted and open. After 40, we need to take every opportunity to reduce the effect of eyelid hooding. This eyeliner technique provides the needed lift to make our eyes appear more youthful. Take note: this is a great makeup over 50 application tip.
The shade used in the tutorial is black.
5. Mascara adds Definition to the Eyes
Mascara is the next step. Essence Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara is a great product for adding both volume and length to lashes.
Applying a couple of coats offers great definition to your eyes.
The shade used in the tutorial is black.
6. Cream Blush is perfect for Mature Skin
Another important factor to look good up close, when applying makeup over 50, is using cream based cosmetics. Using a cream blush such as the ELF putty blush, is ideal for mature skin because it does not emphasize fine lines and wrinkles. This product has a creamy texture that provides a light, sheer color to the cheeks.
The shade used in the tutorial is Turks & Caicos.
7. Highlighter adds the Perfect Luminosity to the Skin
Adding a bit of cream highlighter to the top of the cheekbones, across the bridge of the nose, on the cupid’s bow and chin provides the right amount of luminosity and shine to this makeup look.
Again, I used a cream product. Specifically, Wet N Wild MegaGlo Makeup Stick Conceal and Contour, in the shade: When the Nude Strikes.
8. Bronzer or Powder Sets the Makeup
Using very little powder on the face is the key to keeping this makeup over 50 look fresh and radiant. I recommend using either bronzer or setting powder to set the makeup.
In this look I used bronzer and applied it where the sun would naturally fall on my face. It provides a warm glow while also setting the makeup. The product I used in the video is no longer available, so I have included a similar matte bronzing product by Physicians Formula.
9. Lipstick & Lip Gloss Duo is the Perfect Combo for this Look
This makeup over 50 look is ideal with a nude lip. I used the Flower Beauty Duo Lipstick & Gloss in the shade Honey Nude.
The nude lipstick is moisturizing and is similar in color to the natural shade of my lips. The complementary shimmer lip gloss is ideal to layer over the lipstick to give it a bit of shimmer and camouflage my lip lines.
10. Brow Gel is the Finish Touch
Finally, I finished the makeup over 50 look by applying ELF wow brow gel which is perfect for adding fullness and definition to my eyes, while simultaneously framing my face.
More prominent brows create a more youthful look, so this is a step we should not miss.
The shade used in the tutorial is taupe.
